The world of celebrities is always one filled with fascinating and intriguing subject matters. From mans earliest times we have always been interested in the life of famous or infamous individuals. From the times of the Roman emperors there was even gossip then. A simple look upon many archeological sites displays this historical fact “Augustus likes…” Caesar is in love with…” these are some of the types of headlines we could of expected in ancient roman times. Things have not changed all too much since those times long ago. Today one of the most popular uses of all forms of media is for the reporting and discussion of celebrity gossip. This is quickly illustrated by a simple perusal of a normal newsstand or visit to any popular news website. This article will discuss the ways technology has changed the way that celebrity gossip is reported and considered important.

Today’s celebrity gossip is unique in some fashions from celebrity gossip of previous years. While it has always been widely available in various forms, whether writing on the wall, papyrus scrolls, books and newspapers in ancient times! Today celebrity gossip can travel as fast as light practically can move. The internet has radically changed the method of reporting celebrity gossip. The older technologies only allowed gossip to move at a slow rate and by its very nature limited what was worth reporting. In today’s modern time now anything can be broadcast around the world instantly. This also opens up the wideness of the celebrity pool. Again in past time a celebrity was mainly a political, religious or highly important figure. Words were precious and costly to distribute. Now with internet and instant televised coverage, the low cost of production and wide visibility of all individuals has made countless individual celebrities who before never would have been more than local curiosities.

A great example of this is celebrities who owe their celebrity due to a reality shows or to a public scandal. In past times there was no real way to become famous for these types of things. But now since the world is hungering for both news and celebrities these types of individual are popular. The Kardashians are a great example of individuals who are famous and gossiped about who in previous times would have been unknown rich individuals. Paris Hilton as well is another example of an individual who has benefitted due to the technological advances. Now we can gossip about her dog, boyfriend and whatever she ate for lunch. Previously society would not have cared, since she was no one of major importance.

Celebrity gossip is also not only changing from its older forms based on technology, but it is also becoming more and more controlled by the celebrity themselves due to technology. Twitter and other social media websites allow celebrities the possibility themselves to be the source of the gossip instead of just being the individual being gossiped about. Ashton Kutcher is a prime example of a celebrity who uses social media to generate not only publicity but also gossip about him and others. The recent breakup between him and Demi Moore is a great example of celebrity controlled gossip.
